Joseph (fictitious name), aged 12, residing in the capital, accused his teacher of having threatened to throw him in prison on Tuesday, July 10.
Joseph who attends a prevocational class in a State College at Port-Louis, told police officers that he had asked his teacher the permission to play football with another teacher and the teacher insulted him. After this incident, the teacher allegedly threatened to throw the boy in prison, while accusing him of being responsible of his comrades’ bad behavior. According to Joseph, on Friday, he was on the first floor of the college with a friend.

The friend spat on the ground while the teacher was passing by. The latter thought it was Joseph and reported him to the rector.

Joseph told the whole affair to the school management. “My friend confessed to the rector that he is the one who spat on the floor and that he did not see that the teacher was passing by. But the teacher did not listen to any of this. Three weeks ago, she damaged a chair by throwing it on another student. Then she accused me of damaging the chair. She forced me to admit that I swear in class,” said Joseph. He added that the teacher has only one wish: to get him expelled from the college. Joseph’s mother wants justice to be done.

"My son is traumatised after this incident. He does not want to go to school for fear that the teacher still bully him,” she confessed. On Thursday 19th July, the teacher also gave a statement to the police, as a precautionary measure. She accused Joseph of misbehaviour in the classroom. She however denied all allegations made against her when being questioned by reporters. "What Joseph said is completely false. It was he who on the contrary, threw a bag at me.

He is lazy. Every time I scold him, he gets angry. That's why he wants revenge and tries to harm my reputation. This is the first time I am having trouble with a student,” she said. Jayen Teeroovengadum, Press Secretary to the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, told reporters that he was not aware of this case and he must enquire before commenting on the subject. The investigation continues.
